Tough and Tricky questions: Word Problems.

A certain employee is paid $6 per hour for an 8-hour workday. If the employee is paid 3/2 times this rate for time worked in excess of 8 hours during a single day, how many hours did the employee work today?

(1) The employee was paid $18 more for hours worked today than for hours worked yesterday.
(2) Yesterday the employee worked 8 hours.

Kudos for a correct solution.

Normal hours - $6/hr. Overtime - 3/2*6 = $9/hr

St-1, $18 more than yesterday. --> If overtime it is two hours (18/9) more than yesterday. If normal time it is three hours (18/6) more than yesterday. Still no of hours for the day is not available. So not sufficient

St-2, only yesterday's hours are available. Full normal time hours - 8. Clearly not sufficient.

Combining 1 + 2, extra hours will be overtime so 2 hours more than yesterday. Sufficient

(1) The employee was paid $18 more for hours worked today than for hours worked yesterday.
(2) Yesterday the employee worked 8 hours.

Kudos for a correct solution.

1: We don't know the hours worked on yesterday - Not sufficient
2: We need to find out the hours worked on today not yesterday - Not sufficient

combine both: Hours worked yesterday: 8 hours(48$) Total salary today is 48+18 = $66 from this we can find the hours worked

To solve such a question, we need atleast 2 of the following:

1. rate
2. time
3. total= rate x time

From Stem, we have 1, ie. rate.

Stmt 1: from the given rate, either he worked 3 extra regular hours or 2 over time to make 18 bucks more. NS
Stmt 2: time he worked yesterday doesnt say how many hours worked today-- NS

combined together:
if worked 8 hours yesterday, to make 18 dollars today-- he worked 2 hrs over time. ie. total of 10hrs. Sufficient.
