Hi Samprits,

When dealing with a DS question it is important that you use all pieces of information provided both in the question stem as well as the statement.

We know that 4 < A < 6 and n and m are integers. To find the value of T we need the value of A and the value of n since T = A * 10n.

Statement 1 : (A * 10^m)^0.5 = 23100

Squaring both sides we get (A * 10^m) = (23100)^2 ------> (A * 10^m) = (23100 * 23100) ------> A = (23100 * 23100)/10^m

Now since A needs to be between 4 and 6, we need A to be 2.31 * 2.31, since 2.31 * 2.31 is the only possible product which gives us a value of A between 4 and 6. So the value of m which gives us A as 2.31 * 2.31 is 8.

However statement 1 does not give us any information about n. Insufficient.

Statement 2 : n - m = 7

Here we can have multiple values for n and m and do not have any information about A. Insufficient.

Combining statements 1 and 2

We have A = 2.31 * 2.31, m = 8 and since n - m = 7, n has to be 15. Sufficient.

Answer : C

Hope this helps!

I have a question about the the information presented in the question. In particular this, " 4 < A < 6 "

Am I right in assuming that we cannot consider the value of A to be 5 because the question has not stated whether or not A is an integer. It could be 4.8, 5 or 5.3, too, right?

I got the correct answer as 'C' for this question, but the question I presented above is something I am curious about.

If 4 < A < 6, n and m are positive integers with n > m, and T = A x 10n, then what is the value of T?

1) \(\sqrt{A*10^m}=23100\)

2) \(n-m=7\)

Bunuel VeritasPrepKarishma niks18 gmatbusters

Is below approach correct:

Clearly St 1 and St 2 are insufficient , combining both statements:

\(\sqrt{A*10^m}=23100\)

On squaring both sides we get

\(A*10^m = (23,100)^2\)

Substituting value of A from Q stem, since we want value of T:

\((T / 10^n ) * 10^m = (23,100)^2\)

\(T * 10^(m-n) = (23,100)^2\)

Since we know (n-m) =7 from St 2, together both will give me value of T.

hi adkikani

your approach is perfectly fine
