If the sum of a, b, and c is less than five, is a less than one?

a +b + c < 5

Target question: is a <1???

(1) b + c – 1 > 5

b + c > 6

Two inequalities with different sign...So we can subtract

a +b + c < 5

b + c > 6
-------------------

a < -1 < 1

Sufficient

(2) a < b + c – 1

Rearrange inequality:

b + c - a > 1

a +b + c < 5
-------------------- Subtract

-2a > -4................ Divide by -2 and change the sign

a < 2

'a' could be 1.5.......Answer is No

'a' could be 0.5........Answer is yes

Insufficient

Answer: A
