(1) Of the 60 applicants, exactly 10% passed both the physical and the written exams.

(2) Of the 60 applicants, exactly 50% passed the physical exam, and exactly 20% passed the written exam.

statement 1 gives 10% passed both =- 6

statement 2 gives 50% passed one=30 and 20% passed the other = 12 .. now other 18 may be passed in none/both

Since they Didn't specify that 50% passed in Physical  Only  and 30% in Written Exam  Only ... I think the remaining 20% passed in neither physical nor written Exam.

IMO the answer is B

hi..

you would be wrong here..
if 50% passed in physical and 20% in written, the answer can vary from 30% to 50%..
50% when the 20% in written are a subset of those in physical that is 20% passed in BOTH and 30% only in physical
30% when the 20% in written are separate from those in physical that is 20% passed in written and 30% only in physical
insuff

I tells you that 10% passed in BOTH 
so from I and II answer is 100+10-50-20=40

so answer C

we need both information as statement 1 only tell about applicant who passed both the exam and not anything else whereas statement 2 tell about people who passed and not passed both exams not combined information and by both information we can neither is 24. So IMO is C
