Bunuel
In a city that has a 6 percent sales tax rate, Vinod purchases a cotton shirt and a cashmere sweater. If the cost of the shirt, excluding sales tax, is $100, what was the total amount that Vinod paid for the shirt and sweater, including sales tax?
(1) The sales tax on the sweater is $19.20.
(2) The total sales tax is $25.20
We are already given that price of shirt before sales tax = $100, and sales tax will be = 6% of 100 = $6. So the amount that Vinod paid for shirt including sales tax = $106.
Lets assume price of sweater before sales tax = $x, so sales tax on sweater will be = 6% of x = $0.06x, and total price will be $1.06x. We need x to find our answer.
(1) We are given that 0.06x = 19.2. So we can find x, and can thus find the answer. Sufficient.
(2) Total sales tax = Sales tax on shirt + Sales tax on sweater = 6 + 0.06x = 25.2 (given)
So we get 0.06x = 19.2. Again we can find x, and thus find the answer. Sufficient.
