In Data Sufficiency problems involving a set of objects (such as cards or marbles) numbered consecutively, does the absence of explicit information regarding the distribution of specific attributes (like color or suit) across those numbers allow for the possibility that some numbers are repeated, or should the default assumption be that each consecutive number appears exactly once?

Good question! In a problem like this, where it states that the cards are numbered consecutively, we can assume that there is only one card with each number on it — no repetition. Otherwise, the set wouldn’t really be an example of consecutive numbers — 20, 20, 21 is not a set of consecutive integers.

If repetition of numbers were allowed, that would be more clearly stated or inferrable in the problem. For example, it might say “There is a set of 20 numbered cards. Within that set, red cards are numbered consecutively, and black cards are also numbered consecutively.” In this case, because it describes each subgroup’s numbering separately, it’s possible that there is some overlap.
