Let \(X_2 and Y_2\) be the sales for the companies in 2011 and Let \(X_1 and Y_1\) be the sales for the companies in 2010.
We know \(X_2 + Y_2\) = \((X_1 + Y_1)*1.15\)
For statement 1) we know the sum of \(X_1 and Y_1\) but that only tells us the sum of \(X_2 + Y_2\) and nothing specific on the sales of any of the two companies.
Insufficient.
For statement 2) we know the sum of \(X_2 and Y_2\) but that only tells us the sum of \(X_1 and Y_1\) and nothing specific on the sales of any of the two companies.
Insufficient.
Even when combined we don't get any further insight. we know the increase is 9,000 but what is sales of company x or company y?

Let , the company X's annual sales in 2010 be x and company Y's annual sales in 2010 be y.
From the first statement - x + y = 60000
From the second statement - 1.15x+ 1.15y = 69000
1.15(x+y) = 69000
x+y = 60,000
Since both are same equation , no value of x and y can be found , even after combining .
E is the answer.
