A rectangular table cloth is placed on a rectangular tabletop such that its edges are parallel to the edges of the tabletop. Does the table cloth cover the entire tabletop?

(1) The tabletop is 40 inches wide by 70 inches long.
(2) The area of the table cloth is 4,000 square inches.

Why option C is wrong?

From (1) we find the tabletop area (2800 square inches) and (2) give the table cloth area (4000 square inches). With both information we know that tabletop area is smaller than the table cloth, so the table cloth can't cover the entire tabletop


Option c is wrong because we do not know the exact dimension of the cloth..

It could be 4×1000 or 2×2000 etc.

Sorry...I'm not sure if I agree. Maybe you can tell me why I'm wrong?

The question states that the tablecloth's edges are parallel to the table. That means that one side is EITHER 70 inches OR 40 inches. Since we also know the area of the table cloth is 4000 square inches, our next task is to find out whether, with either of these sides, the tablecloth covers the whole table.

The tablecloth can either be:

40x = 4000
x = 100, which is sufficient to cover the 70 inch side of the table

OR

70x = 4000
x = 57~, which is sufficient to cover the 40 inch side of the table
