Is mn < 100?

(1) m < 2
(2) n < 5

Question: Is mn < 100?

IMPORTANT: Always think of Negative values as well

Statement 1: m < 2

no information about n hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: n < 5

no information about m hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the statetements

m < 2 and n < 5

Case 1: m = 1 and n = 4, mn = 4 i.e. mn is less than 100
Case 2: m = -10 and n = -40, mn = 400 i.e. mn is NOT less than 100

NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option E

Is mn < 100?

(1) m < 2
(2) n < 5

point to note that there is no restriction on sign of both m & n so to get mn<100 we need to check values of m & n

#1
m<2
m can be + 0,1, or fraction + ve number
or else it can be -ve integer and fraction ; but n is not given
#2
n<5
again as in #1 n has no restriction on its rang of values as it can be both + or -ve insufficient
from 1 &2
we get both yes and no to mn<100
as both m=n=1 ; yes
and m=-20 , n = -6 ; no
insufficient
option E is correct
