Question: If x and y are integers, is x/y an integer?
Statement (1) Both x/4 and x/7 are integers
i.e. x is a multiple of 4 and y must be a multiple of 7
Case 1: x = 4 and y = 7 i.e. x/y is NOT an integer
Case 2: x = 28 and y = 7 i.e. x/y is an integer
NOT SUFFICIENT
Statement (2) y/28 is not an integer
i.e. y could be 28 or 56 etc but no information about x hence
NOT SUFFICIENT
Combining the statements
Case 1: x = 4 and y = 28 i.e. x/y is NOT an integer
Case 2: x = 28 and y = 28 i.e. x/y is an integer
NOT SUFFICIENT
ANswer: Option E

Inference: x is a multiple of 4 and 7.
We don't have any information on y, hence the statement is not sufficient.
Statement 2
(2) y/28 is not an integer
Inference: y is NOT a multiple of 28.
We don't have any information on x, hence the statement is not sufficient.
Combined
The statements combined don't help either as x/y can be an integer or not depending on the value of x and y.
Ex.
- x = 4 * 7 ; y = 7 ⇒ \(\frac{x}{y}\) is an integer
- x = 4 * 7 ; y = 13 ⇒ \(\frac{x}{y}\) is NOT an integer
Hence, we can have both yes and no as answers. The statements combined are not sufficient.
