Solution:
This is a weighted average question. I failed to recognize this when I first attempted the question and got it wrong.
(1) During the first six months of 1999, the average price of a movie ticket sold in Alpha City was $6.00
Let,
the # of tickets sold in first half of the year 1999 be = x
the # of tickets sold in second half of the year 1999 be = y
the average price for the first half of the year 1999 be = m
the average price for the first half of the year 1999 be = n
\(\frac{xm+yn}{x+y}=?\)
From statement 1, we have: \(\frac{x6+yn}{x+y}=?\)
Not sufficient as need to know the values of x,y, and n. Eliminate A and D.
(2) During the last six months of 1999, the average price of a movie ticket sold in Alpha City was $6.50
\(\frac{xm+yn}{x+y}=?\)
From statement 2, we have: \(\frac{xm+y*6.5}{x+y}=?\)
Not sufficient as need to know the values of x,y, and m. Eliminate B..
Statements 1 & 2 together:
we have: \(\frac{x*6+y*6.5}{x+y}=?\)
Not sufficient as we still do not know the values of x & y. Therefore, E.

To find the average, you need to know the total number tickets sold in HY1 and HY2. We are not given these numbers, so average could be any number between $6 and $6.5
