Sam was born on November 14th. On what day of the week was he born?

(1) In the year of Sam's birth, January 29th was a Tuesday.

If the year was a leap year, February had 29 days. If it was not a leap year, February had 28 days. Therefore, November 14 would fall on a different day depending on whether the year was a leap year. Not sufficient.

(2) In the year of Sam's birth, July 17th was a Wednesday.

July 17 comes after February, so whether the year was a leap year no longer matters. From July 17 to November 14, the number of days is fixed, so the day of the week on November 14 can be determined uniquely. Sufficient.

Answer: B.

Normal year = 365 days
Leap year = 366 days
The extra day goes in February. 28 ~> 29 days
This is just a fact you need to remember. Memorize it and move on.

Knowing the week day of the before February means we need to find out if it's a leap year or not which we don't know. N.S.
Knowing the week day of the after February means we don't care if it's a leap year or not and can solve. SUFF.
