In Statement 1 equation LHS =40*122
RHS= N*(378-X)
LHS<RHS
Definitely RHS will be +ve, N is positive, (378-X) to be +ve, X must be less than 378 so ans is X<400

Is my understanding wrong?

Katrina has a collection of N fiction books and 40 non-fiction books. The average number of pages in her 40 non-fiction books is 600. Is the average number of pages in her N fiction books less than 400?

(1) the average number of pages in all (N + 40) is less than 478 pages

(2) N < 59

It should be 478 instead of 378.

I have a silly doubt

1. If the average number of pages are increasing overall and we know that the average pages in non fiction are 400 shouldn't it be sufficient to say that the average of fiction is also more than 400.

Example Average of Set S ( 1,2,3,4,5) = 3

Average of Set Q ( 6,7,8) =7

Average of Set S and Q ( 1....8) = 4.5

Hence we can conclude Set Q > S even without the nos ?
