If a candy manufacturer makes a new candy consisting of a core composed of 10 percent chocolate by weight, and an outer layer composed of 40 percent chocolate by weight, what percent of the entire candy, by weight, consists of chocolate?
(1) The entire candy weighs 250 grams.
(2) The ratio of the weight of the core to the weight of the outer layer is 4:1.

I solved this using weighted averages.
Given:
Composition of Chocolate in Outer Layer (OL): 40% or 0.4
Composition of Chocolate in Core (C): 10% or 0.1
Asked: Composition of Chocolate in whole candy (i.e. average of the composition)
What we need? The ratio in which outer layer and Core is divided
St 1:
Total weight - 250gm, but we dont know the ratio in which OL and Core are divided into
Statement is insufficient
St 2:
Ratio is 4:1, we can mark B here now that we know the weight of the chocolate and core.
Lets solve this though:
Weight of C (c) : Weight of OL (OL) = 4/1 = (composition of OL - average composition)/(average composition - composition of core)
(Let x = composition of core)
4/1 = (0.4 - x) / (x - 0.1)
=> 4x - 0.4 = 0.4 - x
=> 5x = 0.5
=> x = 0.16 or 16% total composition of chocolate in the candy
Hence, answer is B
