We need to determine Bill's average speed for his 3-hour trip. The formula for average speed is:

Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

Step 1: Evaluating Statement (1)
(1) Bill traveled a total of 120 miles.
- The total time is given as 3 hours.
- Using the formula:
Average Speed = 120 miles / 3 hours = 40 mph.
- Since we can determine a numerical value for average speed, this statement alone is sufficient.

Sufficient.

Step 2: Evaluating Statement (2)
(2) Bill traveled half the distance at 30 mph and half at 60 mph.
- Let the total distance be D.
- Half the distance is D/2.
- Time for the first half: (D/2) / 30 = D / 60.
- Time for the second half: (D/2) / 60 = D / 120.
- Total time = D/60 + D/120 = (2D + D) / 120 = 3D/120 = D/40.

Average speed = Total Distance / Total Time = D / (D/40) = 40 mph.
Since we arrive at a single numerical answer, this statement alone is sufficient.

Sufficient.

Step 3: Final Answer
Since each statement alone is sufficient, the correct answer is:

(D) Each statement alone is sufficient.
