In a warehouse test, two robots, Atlas and Nova, start at the same point at the same time and move away from each other in opposite directions along the same straight aisle. Each robot moves at a constant speed and keeps running until its battery runs out. Does Atlas travel farther than Nova?

(1) Atlas’s speed is 12 kilometers per hour greater than Nova’s speed.
(2) Atlas runs for one third as long as Nova runs.

(1) Atlas’s speed is 12 kilometers per hour greater than Nova’s speed.

Knowing only that Atlas is faster does not determine who travels farther, because the run times could differ. Not sufficient.

(2) Atlas runs for one third as long as Nova runs.

Knowing only that Atlas runs for one third as long as Nova does does not determine who travels farther, because the speeds could differ. Not sufficient.

Let Nova’s speed be v km/h. Then Atlas’s speed is v + 12.
Let Nova’s run time be T hours. Then Atlas’s run time is T/3.

Nova’s distance = v * T.
Atlas’s distance = (v + 12) * (T/3).

We need to determine whether (v + 12) * (T/3) > v * T:
Is (v + 12) * (T/3) > v * T?
Is (v + 12)/3 > v?
Is v < 6?

Since v could be < 6, or ≥ 6, we cannot determine whether Atlas traveled farther. Not sufficient.

Answer: E.

This is a typical case of having our distance formula but we dont have any more constraints to find our answer.

Statement 1:
Speed relation given,
INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
Time relation given,
INSUFFICIENT

Combining both:

In any ratio you need one as a multiple of another to cancel it out nd prove decisively.
Here we have time as multiple of another, however speed is simply 12 more than the other
D = ST hence when multiplied and taken ratios S dont get cancelled out.
With no other contraints given, it is not enough.
INSUFFICIENT.

Okay let’s approach this question with method of substituting values..

The question says both robot have Constant Speed and both run until battery run out.

1. This clearly says Speed of Atlas = Speed of Nova +12 
 Or Sa = Sn + 12 
 So Atlas is faster than Nova but we don’t know how long they ran, so we don’t have the ‘time’ t

Hence Insufficient

2. This Says Atlas ran for 1/3 rd the time as Nova 
 So if Nova ran for let’s say t hr
 Atlas ran for t/3 hr

But we have no idea about the value of constant speed hence Insufficient

Now together we have

Time : Atlas time ta = 1/3 tn (Time for nova)
Speed: Sa = Sn +12

So see it clearly let’s say Nova took 3hr therefore Atlas took 1 hr.

Now if Sn = 4 kmph Sa = 16 kmph
 Distance travelled by Nova = 4 kmph * 3hr =12 km
 Distance travelled by Atlas = 16 kmph * 1hr = 16 km

Atlas travelled more than Nova

Now if Sn = 8 kmph Sa = 20 kmph
 Distance travelled by Nova = 8 kmph * 3hr =24 km
 Distance travelled by Atlas = 20 kmph * 1hr = 20km

Nova travelled more than Atlas 
So we have a conflict and hence together is not enough as well
