The following appeared in the health section of a magazine on trends and lifestyles:
“People who use the artificial sweetener aspartame are better off consuming sugar, since aspartame can actually
contribute to weight gain rather than weight loss. For example, high levels of aspartame have been shown to trigger a
craving for food by depleting the brain of a chemical that registers satiety, or the sense of being full. Furthermore,
studies suggest that sugars, if consumed after at least 45 minutes of continuous exercise, actually enhance the
body’s ability to burn fat. Consequently, those who drink aspartame-sweetened juices after exercise will also lose this
calorie-burning benefit. Thus it appears that people consuming aspartame rather than sugar are unlikely to achieve
their dietary goals.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
My essay:
The given argument states that normal sugar is better for consumption than artificial sweetener aspartame. To prove this, the argument presents certain points such as, Aspartame reduces brain chemical that registers satiety, which is the sense of being full. Also, It has been mentioned that normal sugar if consumed after at least 45 minutes of continuous exercise enhances the body's fat-burning ability which isn't the case with Aspartame.
And hence people can achieve their dietary goals while consuming normal sugar. While the overall argument seems strong it misses considering certain points that can weaken it, like all dietary goals are not the same and the reason to move to an artificial sweetener isn't the same for all.
Firstly, The argument does not consider the people who are diabetic. Regular sugar is high in calories and isn't good for somebody who is diabetic.
Hence the alternative Aspartame based sweeteners are suggested to such people. The fact to be noted here is that aspartame is only used to give the sensation of sweet to the patients who cannot commit to going completely off-sugar.
Consumption of artificial sweetener for such people is just for taste the dietary goal or physique is secondary.
Secondly, The quantity of sugar that is recommended to be consumed after workouts is not mentioned clearly. Whatever may be the scientific backing for the claim, It cannot be denied completely that sugar even in its natural form is bad for health and should be consumed in moderation. For example, a person might be working out for 2 hrs a day and consuming multiple spoons of sugar after that just to follow the claim made here is not going to help anyway.
Thirdly, The addictive nature of sugar is not considered. There is enough scientific backing for the addictive nature of sugar which even chips manufactures use to make people crave their products. Even the salty or hot chips have some amount of sugar in them which acts as an addictive element in the chips and makes consumers crave for them. Hence other natural alternatives such as jaggery should be considered over sugar if not aspartame.
The arguments claim that consuming sugar over is going help in achieving dietary goals is weak overall as it misses to include the diabetics, the quantity is which sugar should be consumed as well as the addictive nature of sugar that will make the consumer eat more sugar than required.
