Master in Finance or MBA France

Question

Hi all, I need a lot help and advice from everyone here

My situation is a little bit tricky here and I'd appreciate all advice given !!! I need advice on the programs I should pursue, My goals: In a broad sense I would like to move to Europe (long term) and work in IB (corporate finance) I have a strong preference for France as I am attracted to the dynamic and competitive banking culture (and to a lesser extent the program costs) My profile: - I come from Singapore and graduated with a 4 year BBA with Honours (specialising in Finance) from NUS (top university in Singapore), however I have an issue with GPA (converted to 3.1 out of 4) as I initially did not have a clear idea of my career goals and felt lost until the final year when I became acquainted with banking - and because of this I have since had many obstacles pursuing a dream job in corp fin - I have 3.5 years of professional corporate and investment banking experience at 2 non-BB but major IB within the Risk function (non-quant) - I found the work to be unchallenging - During my initial undergraduate years I did 2 overseas internships with MNCs in Beijing, China (6 months) and Paris, France (4 months) - Student exchange semester in Germany (have intermediate level in German) - Recently started French (but aiming to do intensive courses until B2 by masters graduation) - To compensate for the low GPA, I focused on GMAT and achieved 740 (Q49 V41) - Passed Level 1 CFA exam I would very much like to deepen my finance knowledge to make my transition into corp fin by pursuing a masters, but I am very much restricted by the low GPA. I recently got rejected by the ESSEC MiF program - was told by the program recruiter it could be an issue with my age as the program is targeted to pre-exp plus I do not have French proficiency. I am now considering EDHEC MSc Corporate Finance and Banking and EMLyon MSc in Finance, may I know if they are programs which can help me achieve my long term goals? At the same time I have been advised to pursue the ESSEC Global MBA (as I have WE), however, I am not sure if MBA is the right path as I would like to remain my focus in banking and finance, or should I leverage the strong ESSEC brand name to help me in the job market in France ? Please help, any advice is greatly appreciated !!! Suggestions for other programs/paths are welcome

Hi, Considering your future plan, MS Finance will suite you. However, you have a good GMAT score. You can apply to any program. Think twice before applying to the program.

Hey skittleslittles , I must say that you have a pretty strong profile. Although you have low GPA, you have done well on your academic and professional fronts. And, not to mention, you have scored a fairly good GMAT score. Your work experience of 3.5 years is quite a strong point. Moreover, the overseas internships are also noteworthy. The student exchange also depicts your international exposure. Given your low GPA, it can strategically be covered in your essay application by highlighting your work experience, student exchange program, extracurricular, and your overall international exposure. This would certainly enable your profile to stand out from other applicants. Further, embarking on the CFA journey and qualifying the level 1 exam is another point strengthening your profile. With a GMAT score of 740, you can target a specialized master’s degree or an MBA as per your career goals. Personally, I would say that your profile is way stronger to target EDHEC and EMLyon, given that you strategically portray your profile strengths and interest in the banking sector in the school’s application. In France, HEC is miles ahead of any other school. Apply for their master's in international Finance or MBA, your profile fits their requirements.

Graduated in Bachelors of Commerce - 2016 - 71% - Shri Ram College of Commerce (Delhi university)
Cleared CFA level 1 - 2019 - 90th percentile
Company Secretary foundation - 2016 - 89%
Also, have done certification courses from National Stock Exchange India and other certification courses

Professional Experience 
1 year in Boutique Investment Banking as an Analyst
2 year in Consulting and Investment Research as a Senior Analyst
10 months in a Financial Services company as a Financial Analyst

Questions:-
Is 680 a good enough gmat score considering the above information for schools such as Judge Business School, IE , Essec, Esade, SDA and other major European schools
I want to work full time the country of my education and probably settle there, which countries do you recommend apart from Canada and Australia
Looking forward to make a long term career in Investment Banking or Investment Management

Your profile looks pretty good and I must say that you have taken a lot of self-initiatives in your academic and career journey. Clearing CFA exams is no easy task, so congratulations on achieving that the school really appreciates the same.

You have a strong orientation towards finance and the CFA shows that you’ll go above and beyond in the academics, which is something that can be highlighted in your applications.

Your work experiences look good as well, they are all in the finance field which makes your resume relevant and pretty cohesive. Although you’d have to let us know which brands you have worked with, as they make a pretty big difference in the application.

Brands will let us know what value you have created and it is pertinent to showcase what impact you’ve made in your position- what deals you have cracked and so, make sure you highlight that in your application while adding relevant figures and numbers to it.

SRCC is a great college so that strengthens your profile. Though, you haven’t mentioned the program that you’re targeting, but MFin and MBA are going to be a great fit for you.

The colleges you can target depends greatly on your GMAT/GRE scores and 680 is a decent score for Judge Business School, IE, ESSEC, ESADE, SDA but if you try to target a score above 700+ that would be on a better side, complemented with a strong application.

You can target most of the schools you have mentioned with it. 
Apart from the schools, you have mentioned you can also target better schools such as LBS, Oxford, HEC, RSM, and other top schools. Although you’d need to score 710+ in your GMAT to target these schools.

Most of these European countries have good immigration laws, so if you target schools in any of the good EU countries, you can achieve a substantial Return of Investment.

Apart from Canada and Australia, you can target countries like Ireland, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and so on.

So all in all your profile looks good and if paired with a strong application, it can help you get into your target school.
