Hello,
I have a "basic" question that I still haven't been able to figure out...
Is there a difference in meaning between:
I request that he play
I request him to play
Also, I know there are some verbs that can ALSO be used for subjunctive (require, request, insist, etc) but, are there some of these that can ONLY be used with subjunctive? If yes, is there a list?

Actually, request takes ONLY the command subjunctive. So I request that he play is a better option to I request him to play. However, require can take both.,
There is no difference between saying
I require him to play and
I require that he play
To my knowledge, the verbs thatt take ONLY the subjunctive are
demand, dictate, insist, mandate, propose, request, recommend, stipulate and suggest

The difference is not much and lies in emphasis.
"I require him to play" is more confrontational and emphasizes more on "I" making/forcing a requirement.
"I require that he play" puts more emphasis on the second part of the sentence rather than the first part, and has less emphasis on the "I require" part of the sentence =>thus slightly less confrontational. It's not a big difference and isn't something to worry about all too much for the exam.
