Hi ramalo,

Is there a reason why you want to retest in 3 weeks? I ask because while you might have the "ability" to score at a higher level, your practice was never done in a 'realistic and test-like' fashion, so there's no way to know how long it will take you to *consistently* hit your score goal on your practice CATs.

You've also mentioned how you've used your practice resources repeatedly, so we're not perfectly clear on how you handle 'new' material. If you need to do more practice, learn tactics, etc. to hit 750+, then THAT will also take time (and some new practice materials).

There are other sources for reputable CATs, but right now you DON'T need to do a lot of CATs - you need to retrain and that will likely take more than 3 weeks.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

So the reason for retaking it within 3 weeks is because I want to give it before INSEAD's next deadline which is around the 20th of April. I think I have my basics in tact and also have time on my hand. I'm planning to take 2 weeks off from work to concentrate on my GMAT and my INSEAD application. I'm hoping that retraining wont take too long and I can then move onto practicing CAT's under actual time considerations.

Which are the other sources of CAT that I should use? Also which resources can I use for Quant and Verbal that will have a short overview of Tips and tricks? I don't think I have time to go in for any indepth learning at this stage.

Thanks

Male, Indian, IT is a highly competitive pool but male, Indian (what's your field of work?), may not be so. That is to say that 710 may not be a bad score though, unfortunately, the latest 680 doesn't do you any favors! It will be a good idea to take GMAT once again and get 730+. Anything in that range should be fine and thereafter, you should focus on your app.

To improve your score, my suggestion would be to use the umpteen tests you have already taken and find out where you mess up the most in Verbal. Put a lot of dedicated effort (theory + practice) in those areas to ensure that you have a V40 at the end of it all. Also, don't forget to practice Quant simultaneously.

As for practice tests, you can check out the Veritas test series here: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/free-gm ... tice-test/
But I would suggest you take not more than 1 test in a week.

Thanks VeritasPrepKarishma,

I'm the director of Business development and strategy implementation at firm with interests across hydropower, textiles and education with revenues in excess of over US$100m.

To be honest I struggle with different verbal sections in different tests. Theoretically I'm probably weakest in SC where I just try and see which sentence makes the most logical sense using the limited grammar rules such as colon vs semi colon, like vs such as, etc.

Which are the best quant and verbal resources that will help me quickly go over the the theoretical aspects? I clearly dont have time to go through anything in depth right now.

Tips and tricks and so-called grammar rules will not really help you at 700+ levels. That is why I suggested you to put in dedicated effort in a few areas. That will give you better returns than a superficial run of the entire curriculum. Revise what you know and get a better understanding of the topics in which you are weak.

By the way, punctuation is not tested on GMAT and at 700 level, the SC questions will be predominantly reasoning based. I would suggest you to check out our SC book but since you don't have enough time to get it and then go through it, you might want to check out the SC posts on our blog: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/category/gmat/

Got a 710 (49Q 39V) in my first try (Jan 2014) and a 680 (48Q 35V) in my second try (September 2014)

As I belong to the highly competitive pool of Male Indian applicants (non-engineering though) I know I need to improve my score to somewhere in the vicinity of 750.

While introspecting into what might have gone wrong I realized that my preparation lacked something pretty basic. I gave a lot of mock tests but never stuck to the exact timing. I used to often pause my tests, go on breaks and on instances completed tests over 2-3 days. The problem now is that I've used up all of my mock tests- Kaplan (all 5), MGMAT (all 6) and official gmatprep (both)

Moreover I've practiced questions from all over the place: Quant from -OG13, Quant review 2nd edition, Manhattan advance gmat, gmat 800, veritas, gmatclub math book and gmatclub.com questions. Verbal from- OG13, verbal review 2nd edition, veritas advanced, SC grail, etc.

On both occasions I've used the same set of studying material which makes me wonder if I'm using the right material or am I using too many resources?
I am really unsure as to how to restart studying and from where. Planning to retake the test in 3 weeks time. Would appreciate if someone could help me out by recommending a plan of action and also recommending some sources for practice. Also would be great if someone could suggest some other mock tests available (willing to pay for tests also).

Thanks

Hi Ramalo,

First of all you need to change your test taking strategy. It is important that you take complete tests so that you get acclimatized to sitting for approx. 4 hrs.

Second, GMAT is not about studying or cramming 2965 pages of information, which in all likelihood will be forgotten. It is about learning a few rules and perfecting a structured approach to the test. Our advice is to read one book thoroughly instead of 12 books. Trust the book you have chosen and follow the advice eked out from that book. Almost all books will deal with the important teaching points for scoring high on the GMAT hence reading too many books is a waste of time.

Third, keep doing a lot of tests and review your performance on a daily basis. Take as many practice tests as possible. Spend time in analyzing your performance in the test. Typically if you spend 2 hours in a mock test, spend 4-5 hours in analyzing your performance and take a note on how to attempt each question better, faster and smarter. Make sure you apply them in your next practice test.

Hope this helps.Write back to us in case you have any further queries.
