So I gave my GMAT yesterday and got a score of 760. But my Quantitative is very low. Its 48 (73 percentile). My verbals 47. Which I think pushed my score high. I am absolutely shocked. Well I did have to guess the last few questions. But even then the score is bad.
I need some advise here. I am planning to apply to the top five B schools. But I have heard they have a 80 percentile cutoff for Quantitative. I wanna know how strict they are about that. Does anyone have any idea? I mean I do understand that there are a lot of factors, but my questions is..is a low on Quantitative a strict no-no?
I am confused about retaking the test. What do you think about that. This was my second attempt and I had scored 710 (Q 49, V 38) two months ago.
I am really confused and any help will really be appreciated.
TY.

First off, Congrats! 760 is up there in the 99th percentile bracket.
The best course of admission here would be to contact the schools that you want to apply to and ask them if they have any qualms about your Quants score.
If not, then may be you can use the optional essay to describe how you have excellent grades in the Mathematics subjects in your Undergrad and have a 49 in the previous attempt, but some how you got a score that is not a true representation of your potential.

Hi nphatak,

First off, a 760/Q48 is an outstanding score, so you should apply to any Business Schools that interest you. What you 'heard' about the Top5 is NOT true, so whoever gave you that 'advice' should probably not be consulted again. There is a Forum full of Admissions Experts though, so if you have any questions, you should ask them here:

ask-admission-consultants-124/

In that same way, since the level of competition is so high at the Schools that you're considering, you might want to consider working with an Expert on your applications. For what it's worth, calling a Q48 a 'bad' score makes you sound silly.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Give a pat on your back and move on. You have a great score, Quant included - believe that and start working on your applications. Apply to any school you want to - your GMAT score will not be deterrent at all. Q48 shows you have the ability to handle their rigour. Anyway, you also have a Q49 on your scoresheet from a previous, but not-so-long-ago, attempt. I don't think you need to check with anyone whether your GMAT score is acceptable because it is more than acceptable!
Now that the easy part is over, you have a hard battle in front of you - writing brilliant essays!

Congrats for your great score. I won't add more than the respectful GMAT experts did. Just to draw you attention that you need to focus now other parts of application. You need to show case in your essays. Choose your commanders who can give direct honest feedback and shine you. Be ready for interviews. Update your resume to show your achievements. You may need to work on TOEFL if you are international.
The application process need your attention as you did in the GMAT.

Good luck
