Target 700 and 1 month to study

Question

Hello guys,
I've been studying for 2 months and I got the following results on mocks:

06/03: Kaplan 620 (44Q, 31V)
06/27: Kaplan 650 (47Q, 32V)
07/01: GMAT Prep 640 (48Q, 28V)
07/08: Kaplan 670 (47Q, 35V)
07/26: Manhattan 650 (45Q, 34V)
07/31: Kaplan 630 (47Q, 30V)
08/07: Manhattan 670 (48Q, 33V)

I'll do the test in September and I already finished OG, OG Quant, OG Verbal, GMAT 800 and I already read Manhattan SC and CR.
Any recommendations to improve my score? My target is 700.

Hi biakato,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your 7 CAT score results show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 650 +/- a few points). This consistency over the last 2 months Implies that you likely got "stuck" at this score level and never realized it. While you clearly handle certain aspects of the Exam consistently well, you're likely also making certain consistent mistakes. This often happens to Test Takers who use a 'book heavy' study approach. To hit your goal score, you will likely have to make some adjustments to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections - and that will require that you learn and practice some new Tactics (and not just work through more practice questions).

Hi biakato,

Try to drill down into each problem type to ace them.

SC: The questions test various concepts such as S-V agreement, modifiers, parallelism etc. Find out what troubles you. As a general guide line, you can start solving a question by taking the following things in consideration:

1. Find out the subject and the verb
2. See that the S&V agree in number
3. Look out for the modifiers
4. Look out for parallelism
5. Look out for usage of certain words - such as vs like, few vs less etc.

CR: There might be certain types of questions that are troubling you. May be Assumption, may be conclusion, inference etc.
You need to find that out and then practice them
RC: This again can be drilled down into different types of questions and also different topics. See what questions and topics trouble you the most and then practice accordingly.
Quants: Again try to break the questions in topics such as Algebra, Number system (very important), Geometry, PnC etc.

As an addition, start preparing an error log and keep a note of all the mistakes you made and the lessons you learnt from the problems. This will ensure you do not make the same mistake again.

As I can see , you have still 1 GMAT prep test left. You have written only 1 GMAT prep test.
Why do not you write another GMAT prep test. These test are actual representation of official GMAt and very close to real performance.

you should better concentrate on you weaknesses if you have made error log look at it find out you mistakes and overcome. Do practice 700 level questions and use only  GMAC  official mock test to know your current standing, review each test you have taken, meet the pace you require for the test build your stamina of sitting 4 hours.

Hi biakato,

On the basis of your mock scores, I would recommend you to focus on the verbal section. E-gmat verbal online or the E-gmat verbal live are both amazing courses that can really help you improve your scores.

However, given how close your GMAT date is, I personally do not think one should adopt any new method on the final leg of their GMAT Preparation. It may be nice to give a couple of mocks (the official ones) and work on your weaknesses, but trying something new might not work in anyone’s favour. However if you want to improve on any individual area such as Sentence Correction, you may subscribe to the individual SC course as you can finish the whole course in 10 days (with proper dedication). If however you are only looking to indentify and improve on your weak areas, I would encourage you to purchase the e-gmat scholaranium. It is without a doubt, one of the best practice tools for verbal and will indeed help you on the final leg of your preparations.
