Dear Experts,

I appeared for my GMAT yesterday and got 700 (Q49, V35) - Split in Verbal is as follows (CR: 91percentile, SC: 78percentile, RC: 35percentile)

I have to appear for GMAT again in 50 days as my target score is 760 (Q50, V43).

Please help me improve my RC. The new GMAT exam retains the 4 RC with 13-14 Qs in the 65 minute verbal section.
1. I take long to read the passage.
2. Even after that I can't comprehend parts of RC
3. Even if I comprehend the passage, unable to understand the Q to make a link to the right section of the passage & derive the answer

I plan to repeat my e-GMAT course which I was using for my prep in the 1st attempt to solidify my SC & CR.
For RC, please advice me so that I can improve in next 20-25 days so that I can be confident by the time I appear for my next attempt in 50 days.

Note: I'm not a voracious reader naturally and do not read much except the newspaper occasionally.

Look forward for advice that can help me get my desired score and that can save my dream of getting into my dream school.

Hi Life2019!

To really master RC, the absolute most important thing that you should be doing is reading. Read as much as you can, every day, for at least an hour (the more the better!). Read hard, challenging material in English, such as articles from The Economist, The Atlantic, The New York Times, or The New Yorker. And while you're reading, it's important to make sure that you're reading actively. That means constantly thinking critically about what you're reading, and trying to summarize and identify the main point of the articles. As you're reading, ask questions like:

  • What is the main idea?
  • What is the structure and flow of the passage?
  • What is the author's tone and what is the author's purpose?

Although it might not seem like this would make a big difference, reading is the best thing you can do to increase your overall comprehension, which is absolutely necessary for RC questions :-)

Next, spend some time working on strategy. Here is a collection of articles which discuss the key RC strategies:


Spend some time going through the strategies addressed in those articles, and try to incorporate them as much as you can into your practice! Over time, you will improve :-)
