Hi zeniamehta,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC, but retaking a CAT that you've already taken is NOT a realistic way to assess your skills. Seeing even a few 'repeat' questions can 'throw off' the Scoring Algorithm and impact your pacing, energy levels, fatigue, etc. (meaning that they would likely all be better than they normally would be). Thankfully, the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you use the CAT correctly). Thus, if you've already used the 6 Official CATs, then you should consider using CATs from one of those 3 sources next.

Since there is a bit of a 'swing' in the CAT Scores that you listed, I'd like to know more about all of the CATs that you've taken so far:
Thanks a lot Rich for replying. Here are my answers (highlighted below). Appreciate all your help.
1) On what dates did you take each of your CATs, what "brand" was each and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)?
GMAT Prep (1st December) 730 with repeat questions
800 score (7th december) 730 All fresh questions
800 score (8th december) 700 All fresh questions
800 score (9th december) 710 All fresh questions
Magoosh (10th December) 630

2) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
Yes
3) Did you take them at home?
Yes
4) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you plan to take your Official GMAT?
800 score tests were around the same time
GMAT prep tests were not.

5) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?

Did not pause or took longer breaks.
I can honestly admit that i did not take Magoosh test very seriously because i don't like their content anyways..I was just giving it to maintain my rhythm of solving questions.
Would you recommend that i only use official sources for my Prep now as my exam is in 2 weeks?

6) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE (re: on a prior CAT, in an online forum or in a practice set)?
few questions on GMAT Prep and Magoosh were repeated.
But 800 score tests were all 'never seen before' questions

Hi zeniamehta,

I have an important question: Have you exhausted all the official GMAC practice exams or do you have any fresh ones you could take? Also, when are your application deadlines?

Hi zeniamehta,

To start, the process of taking (and reviewing) a CAT requires a significant amount of energy and effort - and takes time to 'recover' from. This is one of the reasons why you typically should not take more than 1 CAT per week - and your last CAT should be taken about 1 week before Test Day. You've taken 4 CATs in the last 5 days - and that is far too many - if you continue to work in this way, then there's a reasonable chance that you will 'burn out' by Test Day (and that is something that you want to avoid).

Unfortunately, seeing even a few 'repeat' questions on a CAT (and/or any questions that you already know the answers to) can 'throw off' the Score Algorithm and impact your pacing, energy levels, fatigue, etc., which almost always leads to an unrealistic, 'inflated' score result. Based on everything you've described, there's some question as to the accuracy of these Score results - but again, you should NOT take another CAT too soon.

Given your timeframe, I suggest that you wait until the weekend to take your next CAT - and I strongly recommend that you take a NEW CAT - if possible, one of the Official GMAT CATs that you have NOT taken before - and take it in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). Once you have that score, you should report back here. Once we have that result, we can discuss how best to proceed.
