Hi everyone!
I hope you are well. I just did my GMAT yesterday and got a disappointing 680 (Q43, V40). My simulations always ranged between 700-750 and Q44-Q50. I would like to apply for a Master's in Finance at the following schools (especially Bocconi):
- ESSEC
- HEC
- Bocconi
- Imperial
- ESCP
My profile:
- 21 y.o. Italian
- 3rd Year BSc Political Economy student at KCL (on track for a 1st/ 4.0 GPA)
- Taken modules like Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Mathematics for Economics,
Econometrics etc.
- Undergraduate Research Fellow
- Worked as research assistant and research intern at a research institute (field of linguistic and computational
analysis)
- Took admin roles (secretary, analyst and VP) in different Uni societies (Asset Management, Financing Group Society,
Political Economy)
As you can see, I have taken quantitative modules at uni and have always scored in the top 1% of the class; do you think that I should retake the GMAT? Any tips to move from a sluggish 43 to a stable 49? Also, I will retake it online so I am curious to hear about your online GMAT experience

Hi mrmonkey03029,
First off, a 680/Q43 is a strong Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. There might be an issue with your Q43 though. Many Programs Schools (and especially Finance-focused Programs) view an Applicant's Quant Scaled Score as an indicator of how that Applicant might handle the 'academic side' of the Program - and a Q43 won't impress anyone. That score implies that you did fairly well on most of the "math" questions that you saw on Test Day, but you made a number of little mistakes throughout the section and you missed out on LOTS of 'strategy-based' points. This is meant to say that by focusing on Quant Tactics, you'll be better able to increase your GMAT Score AND better impress how Admissions Officers will view your potential to handle their respective Programs.
Since you know which Programs you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

If you choose to retest (and take the At-home/online version of the GMAT), then it's worth noting that there are some fundamental differences in terms of how that version of the GMAT is administered (from what you are probably used to seeing). The 'format' of the Test is fixed (Quant, then Verbal - with no break in-between, then an optional 5-minute break, then IR). Having to take Quant and Verbal in one sitting is challenging for many GMATers (especially if you've been taking your CATs with an 8-minute break between sections). If you want to take the At-home GMAT, then you will have to be really rigorous about how you take your CATs going forward (and take them in the exact same fashion in which you will have to take the At-home GMAT).
1) How long have you studied? How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Based on just your practice exam scores I would say it does not hurt to give the GMAT one more shot. However, let's see what you learn when you speak to some admissions consultants on GMAT club. If you decide that you need to retake the GMAT, feel free to reach back out and I can provide some further advice.
