Hi Shivya290497,

From your post history, it appears that you've been studying (on and off) for over 1.5 years, so it's likely that you developed some 'bad habits' during your earlier studies that are a part of these fluctuations (and why you are not consistently scoring higher yet).

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What type of study routine do you typically follow? Over the last 3 months, how many hours have you typically studied each week?
2) What study materials have you used over the course of ALL of your studies? What "brands" of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

My score in mocks is fluctuating between 580-650.
I have been preparing for a year. I reset veritas mocks and my score was 580,610,640,640 and 590. Then I took a free GMAT whiz mock and got a score of 650. But today I took the GMAT official mock and I got 580 in it.
What else do I need to do? And What does this fluctuation mean? I am aiming for a score of 740. What all do I need to do for that?
Please help.

Hi Shivya290497,

It would be too early to conclude anything without knowing the actual reason. To understand what could be holding you back and to suggest you the plan of action, I need a little more information about your GMAT preparation. I would like to know more about

  • your score breakup
  • the time you are able to devote to studying each day
  • the way you prepared till now (your study strategy)
  • the study plan you followed
  • your weak areas
  • your approach of solving questions
  • the resources you have used

Answers to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. And I personally suggest to go for the exam only after you prepared well and are 100% confident.

Having said that, I would like to have a one-on-one conversation with you. The discussion would be mostly around the answers to the above questions, the approximate time you have for your attempt and the plan of action. You can use the link below to schedule a call with me.

Hi Shivya290497,

I'm sorry to hear about how things have been going with your GMAT. While I do agree that you likely will experience score variations when taking practice exams from various sources, I also think that it's important to determine why you recently scored 580 on an official practice exam despite studying for around a year on your GMAT. With all this in mind, once you respond to the questions already asked, I can provide advice on how to move forward.
