Hello,
I would greatly appreciate a profile evaluation for MBA programs (2021).
Background
Nationality: Canadian
Gender: Male
Education
Undergraduate: Business Management degree from the University of Toronto with a final CGPA of 2.8/4.0 although upward trending with final year GPA of 3.7/4.0 – no actual reason for a low GPA besides lack of focus in first year.
GMAT: 760
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program: All three exams passed and awaiting charter upon completion of work experience.
Took three additional courses (Economics, Data Analysis and Accounting) to build an ‘Alternate Transcript’ from the University Of Toronto School Of Continuing Studies and received a grade of A on all three.
Work Experience
Tenure: 3.5 Years upon matriculation
Industry: Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG – Tobacco)
Company: British American Tobacco
Country: Canada
• Financial Analyst – Next Generation Products from January 2018 – July 2019
• Senior Financial Analyst – Next Generation Products from August 2019 – Present
Extracurricular Activities
• Co-President of Undergraduate Finance Club during university
• Senior Consultant (Pro-Bono) for an NGO through a volunteer consulting organization
• Board Member at an NGO
• Mentor to new immigrants seeking employment in the CPG space
Post MBA Goal
Investment Banking in the US
Target Schools
Cornell Johnson, Duke Fuqua, Michigan Ross, UNC Kenan Flagler, Virginia Darden and NYU Stern. Also thinking of applying to Wharton (however this may be a complete shot in the dark)
My question is do I stand a chance at anyone of these schools considering my horrible GPA?

The GPA is going to be a challenge for sure (and I think it will make Wharton too much of a long shot unfortunately) but the GMAT certainly helps to outweigh it & ideally the specifics of your work experience will as well. A lot will depend on the quality of your accomplishments in your career, but unfortunately it can be tough to have achieved quantifiable results when you're in an analyst role just by nature of the job. Ideally the adcom wants candidates who have made meaningful impact (e.g., driving increases in revenue or decreases in cost, launching a profitable new product, etc) . Strong accomplishments at work will also help you point to the fact that that experience is a better indicator of your abilities than the GPA is. Is there anything in particular you can use the explain the low GPA like financial or medical issues that impacted your ability to do your best in school? If it's just about time management and poor judgement than that's not ideal but it's not a deal breaker. In terms of target schools, it's hard to say for certain without knowing more about you & the specifics of your accomplishments but I think you have a solid list given your GMAT & what you shared here. You're just going to want to make sure every other part of your application really shines so you allay any concerns they have about that GPA.
