Hey guys, would appreciate a profile evaluation.
Personal:
- 27 y/o Hispanic/White male
- Will be applying next year to matriculate in 2020
Academics:
- BS Mechanical Engineering from large state school in TX
- GPA: 3.7
- GMAT: Assume 700 (been studying for a couple months, confident I can reach this score)
Work Exp:
- 3.5 years in Oil and Gas
- 3 years working at an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) firm
- Spent 1 year as a Design Engineer, 2 years in Quality Management
- Currently work at a downstream oil and gas consulting firm as a Project Engineer
EC:
- Have volunteered with various organizations in my city (food bank, church, women's shelter, etc.)
- Currently serve as a mentor to an underprivileged middle school student in a nearby school district
- Currently serve as a mentor to a displaced refugee (helping him navigate the city, assimilate to American culture, find employment, etc.)
Target Schools:
- UT McCombs
- Rice Jones
- SMU Cox
- Duke Fuqua (reach)
- Yale SOM (reach)
Post-MBA goals (in order of preference):
- Consulting
- Investment Banking

Thanks for reaching out. Excellent academic background in engineering with strong GPA. Hope you can add to that with a strong GMAT too!
Your volunteer work is really strong too, and definitely keep that up til you apply, possibly keeping an eye out for opportunities to expand your roles even further (e.g. recruiting other mentors, getting a board type position, planning a large fundraising event, etc.)
Your work experience sounds strong too (though of course I don't have all the details), and hopefully you have good examples of leadership/team management, client interaction/presentation, taking initiative. We have seen a number of MBA applicants recently who are exiting oil & gas, so make sure you're thinking about (and can articulate) how that experience will help set you up to do well in your future career. I think a career change is doable, though for purposes of your application, I recommend picking either banking or consulting, not both. So you'll want to do some more research there. Finally, I think you've got a reasonable school list, and assuming GMAT goes well, schools like Yale and Duke are in range (though I agree more on the reach side).
