Found an awkward idiom in SC.

*As much ...so..as*

Eg : He wins frequently,as much because he plays so hard as because he cheats.

I am completely lost on this usage. I can decipher that it is used for contrast, however the usage sounds quite awkward.

Please explain if this is a correct understanding and if there are more examples.

Hi,

The idiom is " as much .... as...."..

so is not part of idiom..
It is just showing extreme to word hard..

the clause is he plays so hard... and idiom is -- as much as..

Most of the times, SO is used with THAT as an idiom ..... so good that..... so lucky that...
But here usage is just to show extreme actions....

he is so boring...
he is so lucky....
