Have a particular situation.
One of my two recommenders has her HBS recommendation completed and only needs to hit submit. She then went on work leave until mid October. I texted her last week and left a voicemail, no response to either. HBS Round 1 closes September 9
Context that matters: she came through for me last cycle both for HBS, but only after repeated delays
My constraints:
- I can't use any of my direct managers.
- My additional recommender is at my current firm but sits outside my division.
- Two possible replacements, both former Goldman Sachs colleagues from roughly 8 years ago: one now at Morgan Stanley, one still at Goldman.
The options as I see them:
1. Hold for her and stay Round 1, betting she surfaces this week.
2. Swap in a Goldman-era recommender now and stay Round 1. One said yes already and is ready with a letter.
3. She never responds and I push to Round 2 and hope she's back and focused by January but risk scrambling yet again.
Two questions:
What would you do?
And do you know whether HBS lets you change a recommender after the application is submitted(48 hours max post submission?)?

I’d swap now and stay in R1. You already have a recommender who is ready, while the current situation sounds risky given the history of delays. I wouldn’t gamble an HBS deadline on someone who is already on leave and not responding.
I’d also contact HBS admissions directly about changing a recommender after submission, since the policy can vary.
