What the data says about HBS interviews
The pattern is actually quite striking. The questions cluster around five major areas:
1. Your career story
Expect heavy questioning on:
- Resume
- Why undergraduate college/major
- Why each job
- Promotions in each job
- Career transitions
- Increasing responsibility
- Lessons learned
2. Your current business/industry
Be ready to explain your company and industry at several levels: Harvard putt much weight on this so take this segment seriously.
30-second explanation → business model → customers → competitors → industry economics → current challenges → regulation → macro trends → your personal role.
3. Leadership
HBS repeatedly asks:
- Leadership style
- Management style
- Promotions
- Influence/persuasion
- Difficult leadership situations
- Team relationships
- Extracurricular leadership
4. Personal side
HBS clearly wants to know the person behind the resume. Prepare genuine, detailed stories about:
- Hobbies
- Interests
- Sports
- Volunteering
- Extracurriculars
- What you value outside work
Don't treat these as throwaway questions, they can become surprisingly deep.
5. Future + HBS fit
Although among the 16 interview reports the following questions were not very apparent but an interviewee must prepare them well. You should have crisp answers to:
- Why MBA?
- Why now?
- Why HBS?
- Short-term goal
- Long-term goal
- What you would contribute
- How you would thrive
- What might challenge you
Bottom line
The data strongly suggests that an HBS interview is not primarily a “Why HBS?” interview. It is much more of a deep conversation about your Job, career, decisions, leadership, industry knowledge, personal interests, and future trajectory.
