Conducting thorough research on business schools is one of the most important parts of a successful MBA application.
It helps you target the right schools, build the right strategy and significantly improve your MBA essays and interviews.
Here are 7 effective ways to conduct business school research that we teach all our clients.
1️⃣ Campus visits: Visiting the business school campus and connecting with current students and the admissions team is the best way to learn about a school's culture and your potential experience inside and outside the class. You also can register to attend a class (if available) and explore how your campus life would be. Most schools eagerly welcome prospective students and take such visits as a strong expression of your interest in their program!
2️⃣ Speaking with current students or alumni: Most schools have assigned selected student ambassadors to speak with prospective students. Talk to them about their experiences and discover how that particular school would be a good fit for you (or not). Arrange a 1:1 in-person coffee chat if possible or do a virtual chat to get unique personal insights.
3️⃣ In-person MBA fairs: Most top schools travel globally to big cities to meet prospective students. Attend these to meet the admissions team + alumni, learn about their experiences, and use these opportunities to build connections with the school community. At such events you can connect with multiple schools in a single evening.
4️⃣ In-person school events: Many schools host small group events in cities around the world where you get a chance to meet with local alumni and sometimes even traveling faculty and admissions team to learn about the program offerings in more intimate settings.
5️⃣ Virtual MBA events: If you can't attend in-person events, make sure to attend at least 2-3 events for each of your target schools. Most schools host online events and regularly publish their details on their websites. Additionally, orgs like QS MBA and GMATClub also host virtual events where you can attend multiple webinars in a short duration.
6️⃣ B-school's website: There's a wealth of information available on each school's web pages. But dig deeper beyond the top pages, go through student blogs, the latest news, faculty books and research papers, alumni stories, subscribe to newsletters - to learn how the MBA program can enable your aspirations.
7️⃣ Social media: A great way to know about the latest happenings at a school - that can also enrich your conversations with students, alumni and personalize your interview answers. Follow each of your target schools on top social platforms and immerse yourself in their worlds!
