It has definitely been done. It seems like most people are vague about the other schools that are in the mix when they ask for more money. On the other hand, some people come right out and say that they have $X from Y school, and while they would love to attend School Z, they are not sure if they can turn down all that money.

Bottom line advice: be polite and tactful and you never know what will happen. The worst they can do is say "no."

Agreed with this. I tried (and failed) but I was very polite, straightforward. Doesn't hurt.
