Hypothetical: Simon ($$) vs Owen or Rice

Question

I have been admitted to Simon with 50% tuition scholarship. I have been waitlisted by Owen and Rice (Jones). Vanderbilt was my top choice going into the application process. I am looking for input on if I am able to get admitted off waitlist to Owen or Rice with no scholarship vs 50% for Simon. My post-grad industry interest is healthcare. And yes money is important in my case. I will be taking loans for any tuition that is not covered by scholarship. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for being transparent about the situation being hypothetical.

Owen or Duke would have been ideal in your case. Obviously we don't get to choose things sometimes.

Do you know if Simon has much of a healthcare connection? I only know them as a strong finance school with research.

I would probably head to Simon if you are interested in finance and that could be your second focus. If you are dead set on Healthcare then Owen without any $ is a worthy choice

Thanks for the reply! My plan at Simon would be to concentrate in finance and healthcare, which is allowed and was actually one of my questions during the interview. I'm really unsure about Simon's healthcare connection outside of western New York, but I grew up in Buffalo, about 60 minutes from Simon, and Simon is highly respected in this area. Although some may have dreams of living in the major cities, I am from a small town and am not in any hurry to run off to NYC or the like. Of course, if I can't get the admits off the waitlist, then this is all a moot point, so thanks for your input, means a lot coming from you!

Like you pointed out, this could be a moot point (i hope it isn't!) but I'll weigh in nonetheless.

First, do you know where in the health care industry you're trying to break in? It's a really unique field in that it cuts across different verticals (pharma/biotech, med devices, hospital admin, payer/insurance) as well as horizontals (consulting, finance, marketing, etc.) and there is huge variation in the recruiting process.

Second, do you have a strong desire to stay in western NY?

If Simon checks all the boxes, has your target company(ies) as a recruiter, and you connect with the students, then I see no issue in choosing that route. Getting out of school with little or no debt is a terrific feeling, and helps ensure that you're choosing the right job for the right reason (rather than chasing a couple thousand dollars).

Feel free to PM me if you have questions, though. I went to UR undergrad, decided on Owen (with acceptance and $$$ from Simon), and entered into health care, so I can probably relate well.

Anyone have any input on Rice (Jones), just in case I get admit off waitlist? I see they made a nice jump up to 25 from 33 on US News rankings.
