I was recently admitted to Wharton FT MBA, but given some extenuating circumstances related to COVID have considered switching to EMBA program. I am the co-founder of a high school and looking to pivot to Ed Tech / VC. Thoughts on an EMBA being able to accomplish this and as a risk buffer given uncertainty in economy.
Congrats on your admit! Wharton FT MBA is pretty amazing score!
Most people feel that having a FT MBA will provide the most shielding against COVID-19 economic ripples. I have not considered doing an EMBA as a way to mitigate risk....
For one, the EMBA program is not as competitive and definitely easier (not easy but easier) to get admission to. So in some way you would be trading off to a less competitive program. It is like training for olympics only to attend a local competition.... The format is different and usually you do not have to relocate; it allows working full time and take weekends off. The trade off is that you are working and doing an MBA and usually it is a good fit if you are sponsored by the company or you are planning to stay within the industry or you have non-business background and looking to take up a stronger business role in a promotion (e.g. Sr engineer going into a COO role)... At the same time, there are certain things EMBA is not designed for and that's recruiting and leveraging on campus recruiting. It does not mean you can't but just means many of the opportunities will be impossible to attend due to different schedules or not being on campus. You can definitely network your way around but I feel that takes away some of the value the program like Wharton offers. Moreover, it is really hard to be doing an MBA. It is extra hard to do a FT job + EMBA and you won't be able to recruit at the same time unless your job is very very flexible.... most people end up letting their guard down somewhere, and usually networking/recruiting is what gets the least attention and people settle back into their old job.
I would say that if you are slightly pivoting (which it seems you are), you can do an EMBA. You are combining it with a FT job so the impact/transformation is less, the recruiting options/opportunities are fewer, and you are a part of a less competitive group. Definitely can be done and can help you achieve your goals (looking into my murky crystal ball here). The FT program is the ultimate thing. Yes you quit your job and yes, you have to find another one but that's why you do is because your back is against the wall and going to your old job is not an option. I guess it depends on some of the ways you intend to leverage the MBA experience and what you are looking to get out of it.
Good luck with the decision!
