Hi everyone,
I have been accepted to IE Business School with a partial scholarship and Frankfurt School of Finance and Management for their Master in Management programs.
Ideally, I would like to stay back in Europe for some time to work in a consumer goods company, preferably in a marketing functionality, before coming back home. However, I do not speak neither Spanish nor German, but I would definitely like to learn them. Spain only provides me with a
1 year post study job search visa while Germany provides me with a
18 month post study work visa.
While IE's program is 10 months, Frankfurt's is 24 months, which provides me with time to weather out the economic fallout due to the pandemic. However, IE seems to posses a better recognized brand name in Europe than Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Does anyone have any additional information about Frankfurt school of finance and management.
Any additional insights that might help me arrive at a decision is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Hi Josecal
Congrats on your admits to these schools. I am a current IE MBA student and had also considered a school in Germany before making my decision to move to Madrid - and am very happy with my decision so far. I have a few comments about the schools, areas, etc...but want to start with a clarifying question to you first:
Are both of your acceptances into a Master in Management program?
What are your career / post-study plans?
OK, after I reread your first sentence a few times I concluded that you have been accepted into MIM programs at both schools. Due to the basis of this forum, I tend to think in terms of MBA first sometimes.
In terms of:
School - IE probably has a better brand name, but I am not as familiar with the MIM market - so I will have to defer to others for this.
City - I love Germany, but will have to give the edge to Madrid over Frankfurt for a city to live and study in. Many people do not factor the city into this decision enough - remember you will live there for a year or two and will always have contacts in that city for the rest of your life. So choose one that you would like to come back to and will have good potential as a network builder.
Post-Grad Visa - I am not sure what country you are from, but I (US Citizen) actually found the visa opportunities to be quite different. Spain does not grant a job search visa automatically, you have to apply for it or find a job during school. Germany was much better about the visa, I think your reference to 18 months was the same as I recall. I do not know how the current pandemic will affect these visas either - depending on the government it could go either way for foreigners.
Opportunities - Prior to the current situation Germany has a better economy and wage average, but companies there are still discovering the benefits of Master's degrees (except large multi-national companies) - Berlin does have a good start-up hub though. Spain is more receptive to Master's degree holders, but has a 'so-so' economy. There is elevated unemployment, and wages are lower (but so is the cost of living) - these items don't seem to deter many people though, I think it is a good work-life balance type of city for many people.
If you want to hear more about IE directly or to see if I can connect you with a current MIM student, send me a direct message.
Good luck with your decision
JMM
