Hi everyone,
I am deciding between Sloan and Wharton (admitted to other M7 programs and INSEAD but decided to turn those offers down) and I wanted to hear your thoughts regarding this. Thank you!
Nationality: Western European
Background: MBB in European office, studied industrial engineering
Goals: 1) Option 1: go back to the former employer (I am sponsored) 2) Option 2: tech (global scale up or big tech) 3) Option 3: VC. The target region would optimally be Europe.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to visit the schools before classes start
WHARTON
PROS:
- Brand: is crazy good, I know I could use it a lot, especially in VC
- Diverse community and culture: I had an excellent experience talking to fellow admitted students or alumni, I think I would find interesting people from any background
- Campus in SF
CONS:
- Broader university: while Penn is a great uni, I don't think its reputation is similar to MIT's, especially internationally.
- Philly: I have never been to Philly but I think I wouldn't like it that much
- International reputation: Penn and Wharton, to my knowledge, are not well known here
MIT SLOAN
PROS:
- Broader university: MIT brand is unmatched internationally + I think I would also enjoy a lot to be at the center of innovation
- Culture: I had a fantastic experience talking to Alumni and students, probably better than talking to Wharton's alumni
- Location: Boston / Cambridge seems much more interesting to me than Philly. As a sponsored applicant who will likely go back in Europe after the two years, this is an important aspect to consider.
CONS:
- Brand: vs Wharton, I believe there is no comparison, this is the most significant point in my cons list
- Diversity of the community: I had the feeling that everyone is interested in tech, which is certainly nice but at the same time I would have liked to find people interested in other career options as well + I fear finding mostly nerdy people or people interested only in tech.

Congratulations on being accepted into these programs. I can appreciate the gravity of the situation as I had to make a similar decision not too long ago and decided on Wharton. I also have an international background.
University Brand: Internationally, MIT is more famous than UPENN. But what is it famous for? It is famous for its strong technical education, not Business. Also, watch your bias as I feel you connected more with MIT because of your technical background.
Wharton Vs Sloan: Wharton is leaps and bounds ahead of Sloan. The Wharton Alumni network of over 104K people will be at your beck and call. If you go to Wharton your brand will be Wharton and not PENN necessarily. Like you, I thought Wharton was not famous internationally but when I talked to international folks about my dilemma, I was surprised to know Wharton is actually very well known and is regarded as having a stronger reputation than MIT when it comes to business. Remember, opportunities that will come to you will come from the fact that you have a MBA, and whoever will give you those opportunities most likely knows that Wharton is a stronger brand compared to MIT Sloan. With your engineering background, when you mention MIT in future, most people will likely assume you went there for engineering. MIT has the technical aura surrounding it, and it dwarfs all of it other programs including the Sloan MBA.
My vote is on Wharton.
But at the end of the day this is a life changing decision and you will have to choose where your heart leads you. Just know that you will likely meet Wharton rejects at Sloan and have to live with the fact that you passed over Wharton to go to Sloan 😂.
I will also leave you with this. Remove yourself from the situation and assume having to advise someone else on making this choice. How would you advise them? Also, if you were in the position to hire someone with a MBA, who would you hire, A Wharton grad or a Sloan grad?
I know you are having sleepless nights because of this. I know because I have been there. Goodluck making this decision.

MIT Sloan is my dream school but I got rejected - so in this case I clearly choose... Wharton.
With your profile & goals, I believe that Wharton is a better fit for you. You do not have to worry about the brand, I believe that Wharton is well-known worldwide.
