Hi All,
I have these two offers:
Full Ride + Forte Fellowship from McCombs
$50k + Fore Fellowship from Tuck
According to my calculations, if I go to Tuck, I have to take extra $140k loan. (including living expenses)
Post my MBA, I want to do Product Management and I already come from a tech background.
My Questions:
1. How much difference would brand value of Tuck matter in Tech industry?
2. If I change my mind and want to try out consulting or anything else in future, would Tuck provide more opportunities?
3. From solely Product Management/Tech point of view, what seems like a better choice?
4. What opportunities can Tuck provide me, which I won't be able to get in McCombs?
Basically, I want to consider that is it worth taking so much extra loan to join Tuck?
Any opinion will be super helpful.
Thanks,
Smriti
Hey
ssmritisharma,
Congratulations on these enviable admits!! Not easy securing such tuition waivers from schools like Tuck and McCombs!
To sum up my thoughts in a nutshell, if you are planning on being in the IB / Consulting industries your default choice should be Tuck (they are a reputed program on the East Coast and hence send a lots of students in these roles in the Greater NYC area). However, if you are planning for a career in Product Management in Tech or Tech Entrepreneurship I would suggest McCombs over Tuck.
Of course you do need to keep the brand premium in mind and decide whether its worth the additional $140k loan for you personally. Both the programs are great and have a very diversified classroom and hence I wouldn't think there would be substantial difference in the classroom experience.
You also need to consider the location premium of Austin as a city, its a growing technology hub and a lot of the large tech players are in fact moving from Bay Area into Austin (such as Tesla, HP etc )given the exorbitant Real Estate. Plus Austin has a very budding entrepreneurial ecosystem something most other places cannot offer, so you will have the opportunity to interact with tech companies both small and large during your program.
See the following responses:

If you talk specifically the tech industry, I would say that McCombs has a pretty solid reputation both in the Bay Area and the budding Tech hub of Austin2. If I change my mind and want to try out consulting or anything else in future, would Tuck provide more opportunities? -
For consulting I would suggest to go to Tuck hands down3. From solely Product Management/Tech point of view, what seems like a better choice? -
McCombs may have a slight advantage since there is a whole spectrum of technology companies in the Austin Area4. What opportunities can Tuck provide me, which I won't be able to get in McCombs? -
For most large US blue chips, there is national recruitment and both schools will probably help you get the initial shortlist post which it will depend on your experience, classroom learnings etc. Tuck does offer a better road to NYC area which is the biggest recruitment destination for most business schools.Hope that help? All the best!
