Profile evaluation for ISB 2024 intake

Question

Hi All,

I am considering applying to isb in r1 2024

College : 7.6 CGPA ( SRM Chennai) 
Engineering in IT, Passed out in 2019. ( published a research paper)

GMAT 645 ( Q84, V80, DI82)

4.5 years of work experience ( sales, consulting and Data Engineering and Science ) 
Currently working with TCS ( serving notice period)
Had been always in client facing role. 
Multiple top performer awards

Mentored team of around 5 members for around 1 year
Team leading experience of 6 months (other then mentoring experience) ( 10 team members)

Helped client with cost and time effective processes. 
While in sales generated approx 10cr in revenue.

1 year of entrepreneurial experience ( unfortunately need to shut down because of COVID).

I have been a part of NGO for more than a year now.

Through MBA I plan to develop skills around tailored analytical decision making and developing strategies.

Sparsh007 - GPA and undergrad pedigree are fine. A higher score (665+ GFE) would increase chances given the competitive pool at ISB, so retake the exam if you can. Work-ex is interesting given the TCS brand, data-science/ consulting angles and leadership/ entrepreneurship experiences. Would need to understand more details here to assess the strength of your professional arc. It'd also be crucial to have a strong narrative covering your post-MBA goals (which sectors/ functions etc) and how/ why an MBA (and paritcularly ISB) fits in. Hope this helps. Leading and mentoring teams showcases your leadership potential.  Share examples where your leadership directly contributed to your team's success.  This could be projects where you guided your team to meet challenging goals or improve processes.  
 Solutions-Oriented:

You’ve helped clients with cost and time-effective processes, which demonstrates your problem-solving abilities.  Detail a specific situation, the problem you identified, the steps you took to solve it, and the positive outcome.   
 Sales Achievement:

Generating approximately 10 crores in revenue is significant.  Ensure your numbers are accurate as they might be scrutinized during the interview . Instead of just stating the figure,  explain how you achieved this .  Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your response effectively.   
 Entrepreneurial Experience:

One year of running your own business is valuable, even though it had to shut down due to COVID.  Could you share more about this ? Describe your business model, any funding you raised, and  the key lessons you learned.   This shows resilience and adaptability.   
 NGO Involvement:

More important than the duration is  the impact you’ve made . What specific contributions have you made to the NGO? Even if you made a difference in one person’s life, it’s worth highlighting.  Share the story of your impact.   
 Career Goals:

You mentioned wanting to develop skills in analytical decision-making and strategy. That’s great, but think about  where you want to apply these skills . Which specific roles or industries are you targeting post-MBA?  What job roles at ISB excite you the most?  Where do you see yourself in the long term?  
 Next Steps:

Clarify Your Career Goals:  Define the roles you are targeting and how an MBA from ISB will help you achieve these goals. 
  Use Structured Responses:  Frame your achievements and experiences using the STAR or RAC methods for clarity and impact. 
  Detail and Impact:  Focus on detailing the impact of your actions in every role and project you’ve undertaken.  
 Final Thoughts:

You have a realistic chance at ISB , but the success of your application will depend on how well you present your experiences and achievements.

Thanks for taking out time and replying.

I am for sure planning on writing the GMAT again. 
Leaving TCS, I plan to devote some time on GMAT and work on business idea. 
Reason to leave TCS is that my current role is more on the engineering side, but I am keen on having a transition in business oriented roles.

That’s where MBA comes into picture to help me equip required knowledge and skill set to land up relevant roles. 
Post MBA I would like to land up in some Strategy Consulting positions, where I can use my prior analytical skills and newly added MBA skills together, to deliver data oriented , strategically sound decisions.

I am afraid that leaving a job for GMAT preparation is not a great idea, from an application perspective. Now you would have an additional task of explaining this gap in the application.

It's not a showstopper though. So, please try to maximize your GMAT score.

While aiming for the highest GMAT score you can achieve is important, keep in mind that the GMAT is only one aspect of the application. We've seen GEM candidates with lower GMAT scores successfully gain admission to ISB by highlighting other strengths and presenting a well-rounded application.
