I think using
ChatGPT or
Claude as part of your essay process is totally fine — in fact, they can be great tools for refining structure, clarity, and flow. The key is to make sure they’re supporting
your authentic voice, not replacing it.
If an essay sounds like it’s been entirely AI-written, it risks turning off reviewers. Adcoms are usually very good at spotting overly polished, generic, or impersonal language that doesn’t align with the rest of your application.
My advice: Keep your own ideas, stories, and personality at the core.Use AI only for polishing phrasing or organizing ideas, not for generating content from scratch. After AI editing, read it aloud — if it doesn’t sound like you, re-write sections in your own tone.
That way, you get the benefits of these tools without losing the authenticity that makes your application memorable.
