I graduated from HEC some years ago, and I keep seeing the same questions come up on this forum, so I figured I'd write something more complete than the usual 'the average GMAT is 690, good luck' posts. This is going to be long. Grab a coffee.
PART 1 — GETTING IN
Let's start with the thing everyone obsesses over.
The GMAT
HEC's average GMAT Focus score is around 635, with a Classic median around 690. But here's the thing — and I genuinely mean this, it's not just something schools say to sound inclusive — HEC is one of the most holistically evaluated programs I've come across. I'm not saying this to make you feel better about a 600. I'm saying it because I watched it happen.
A friend of mine got in with a sub-600 GMAT. She had a master's degree and had spent years as a professional ballet dancer before transitioning into a corporate career. That combination — the discipline, the performance background, the pivot, the story — made her one of the most interesting profiles in our class. She got in not despite her GMAT but because everything else was genuinely compelling.
So what does 'holistic' actually mean at HEC?
It means they're looking for people with structured, coherent profiles. Not perfect profiles — coherent ones. They want to see that you've built something, led something, created something. That your career has a logic to it, even if it's not a straight line. That you've had experiences that go beyond sitting at a desk and getting promoted.
Significant professional experiences carry enormous weight. So does leadership — not the 'I was team lead for six months' kind, but evidence that you've actually influenced people and outcomes. So does anything that makes you genuinely different from the 200 other applicants with 680+ scores and consulting backgrounds.
Once you're in the competitive zone score-wise (roughly 620–640+ FE), additional GMAT points return very little. I'd estimate that going from a 650 to a 680 on the GMAT will do less for your application than spending those same weeks sharpening your essays and having real conversations with alumni.
The application itself
The essays are where most people either win or lose this thing, and most people lose it by writing essays that sound like a McKinsey deck. Structured, polished, impersonal, and completely forgettable.
HEC wants to see you. Specifically:
Networking before you apply
This is probably the most underrated part of a strong HEC application. Before you write a single word of your essays, talk to current students and alumni. Not to name-drop them in your application (though that doesn't hurt), but because those conversations will completely change how you think about the school and what you write.
HEC is a tight-knit community, and people are genuinely happy to talk. Reach out on LinkedIn, come to information sessions, and attend virtual events. When you then write 'I want to join HEC because of X', and X is something specific you learned from a real conversation rather than from the website, the adcom can tell. It comes through in the specificity and the tone.
The interview
If you get to the interview stage, the main thing to know is that HEC interviewers tend to dig. They'll push back on things you say, ask you to go deeper, and test whether your answers are rehearsed or real. Don't try to sound perfect — try to sound genuine and self-aware. Know your application inside out, because they will.
PART 2 — LIFE AT HEC
The campus
HEC's campus in Jouy-en-Josas is something that's genuinely unique in the European landscape. It's one of the only top business schools in Europe that offers a real residential campus experience, and I cannot overstate how much this shapes the program.
When you live on campus, the Master's stops being a commute-to-class-and-go-home experience and becomes something much more immersive. The friendships you build are deeper because you're around each other constantly — not just in lectures and group projects, but at dinner, at the bar on a Tuesday evening, during spontaneous study sessions at midnight. That's where the real bonds form, and those bonds become the network you'll actually use for the next twenty years.
Paris is 20 minutes away by train, and HEC runs a free daily shuttle. So you're not isolated — you have full access to the city whenever you want it. But being on campus, especially in the first year, means you don't miss anything. You're there for the impromptu conversations, the late-night project crises, the random events that nobody advertised.
First year vs. second year living situation
My honest advice: live on campus for the first year, no exceptions. I know Paris is tempting — it's one of the greatest cities in the world, and it's right there. But the first year is when your cohort forms, when the friendships and professional relationships that will define your MBA experience get built. If you're commuting in from Paris, you'll miss the texture of that.
The second year is different. By then, you know everyone, the social dynamics are established, and moving into the city becomes a genuinely good option if you want it. Plenty of second-years live in Paris and don't feel like they're missing out. But first year? Stay on campus.
Clubs and student life
HEC has an enormous range of student clubs — professional (finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, tech), sports (from football to sailing to martial arts), and cultural. Join things. Not strategically, but because the people you meet through clubs end up being some of your closest connections.
The club ecosystem is also where a lot of the career stuff happens informally. If you're in the Finance Club, you'll be organising panels and dinners with people from Goldman, JPMorgan, or Lazard. That's not just networking — it's relationship-building with people who will remember your name.
Career resources and recruiting
HEC's career services are strong, and importantly, they're not France-centric. The career fair consistently brings in international firms — consulting (McKinsey, BCG, Bain all recruit heavily), finance, tech, and more. There are specific events with firms like Goldman Sachs and dedicated recruiting initiatives for different industries.
One of the highlights is the London Trip — an organised visit to the City of London where you meet firms, attend events, and get face time with people from major financial institutions. If finance or consulting in London is on your radar, this is not something to skip.
The academic pace — bimestres
HEC runs on a bimester system, which means the academic year is divided into periods of roughly two months each. Each bimester typically ends with 3 to 5 exams, plus you'll have group work running throughout. It's intense. The rhythm is fast, and if you fall behind, it's hard to catch up.
Group projects are a huge part of the experience — and I mean that both in terms of workload and in terms of what you actually learn. You'll work with people from very different backgrounds and cultures, and learning to navigate that effectively is one of the most valuable things you'll take away from the program. Go in with patience and flexibility.
PART 3 — OPPORTUNITIES YOU SHOULDN'T MISS
Professional Gap Year
HEC offers the option to take a professional gap year during the program — essentially pausing your studies to work full-time for a year before completing the Master's. This is an underutilised option that can be incredibly powerful, especially if you want to test a new industry, build experience in a specific market, or come back with something concrete to add to your story. You keep the safety net of being enrolled at HEC while building your CV. Worth exploring seriously if it fits your goals.
Double Degree
HEC has a range of double degree options with other top schools. For anyone with finance or strategy ambitions, the HEC–MIT Sloan double degree is widely considered one of the strongest combinations available globally. You graduate with degrees from both schools, you spend time in both ecosystems, and you end up with access to two exceptional alumni networks.
If this is something you're interested in, plan for it from day one. The selection process is competitive even within the HEC cohort, and the deadlines don't wait. Go in knowing you want it and position yourself accordingly from the start.
Final thought
HEC is a school where the experience is genuinely greater than the sum of its parts. The GMAT is one input. The campus is the multiplier. The people you meet there — classmates, professors, alumni — are what you'll still be talking about in ten years.

- Avoid the clichés. 'I want to leverage my cross-functional expertise to drive impact at scale' will get you nowhere. If you catch yourself writing something that sounds like it was generated by a press release, delete it and start again.
- Be specific about HEC. This matters more than people think. 'HEC has a great reputation and strong alumni network' tells them nothing. Talk about specific programs, specific professors, specific aspects of the culture that you've actually learned about. Which brings me to the next point.

While I was waiting for an official reply, I had 2 hypothesis about my being ineligible:
- GMAT Score: the most probable one, 615 is not bad, but it is below average, which makes it a "fast" exclusion for my candidacy,
- Being "way too experienced" for the program: I got this hypothesis because of the reply from ESMT Berlin.
Overall, I aim to become a strategic decision-maker/game-changer because that's what I feel and genuinely want after these years of work experience. I am not very sure which programs can be the best for me, but I would love to have a couple of options.
So, as I am getting prepared for the next year's intake, I would love to clarify for myself the probable gaps I should work on.
I am already in touch with some students, because I wanted to get some insights about the Imagine Fellowship program (I can be eligible as well, so I wanted to try my best).
Here is the essay I wrote down for the scholarship application, even though HEC had some strange technical inconsistencies in the Need-Based Scholarship application procedure.
My questions might be naive, but I think it is worth asking here:
1. Is my profile considered valuable for HEC?
2. Which programs could be great shots for me (maybe even outside of HEC, in Italy or Spain)?
3. Based on my 2026 Intake application, are there any components that I might be missing?

Hi Aren, thanks for sharing everything.
First, the good news.
Your military background is a genuine differentiator, and not in a superficial way. Two decorations, progression from soldier to sergeant to platoon commander, serving during the 2020 war. Most applicants at European business schools simply don't have anything like this, and when framed correctly it speaks directly to leadership under pressure, which is exactly what adcoms want to see. Your Imagine Fellowship essay is actually your strongest piece of writing. The shopkeeper story in Meghri is specific and grounded in a way that genuine leadership narratives rarely are. That essay shows you can write.
Your technical depth is also real and coherent. The Deep Learning specialisation, the Armenian Code Academy course, the work at Align Technology all tell a consistent story of someone who built genuine ML competence, not just collected certificates.
On the MSc DSAIB ineligibility: my guess is the GMAT wasn't the issue. MSc programs at schools like X-HEC and ESMT typically have a hard cap around 18 months of post-graduation experience, sometimes less. With 4 years post-graduation (2 of which military), you were almost certainly above their target profile regardless of your score. This is a program fit issue, not a quality issue.
For the HEC MBA, the picture is genuinely positive. Your profile is the kind HEC finds interesting: non-traditional background, strong leadership story, real technical expertise, geography that's underrepresented in the cohort. The 615 FE is the main thing to address before applying. It's not disqualifying at all, but pushing to 650+ would give the rest of your application much more room to breathe. Sectionally your Verbal and Quant are already solid, so DI at 78 is the one to work on.
What the application is currently missing is some signal of business interest on the CV. You don't need to change jobs, but adding something concrete helps a lot: a business-focused online course, a case competition, a project where you engaged with the commercial or strategic side of a problem rather than just the technical side. Adcoms want to see that you understand business contexts, not just data pipelines, and right now the CV doesn't give them much to work with on that front.
On the student activism from 2017 to 2020: worth including briefly in the additional info section if you can connect it to a specific impact or leadership moment. Don't lead with it, but don't leave it out either.
One thing worth looking into: the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship, which is a French government scholarship that covers tuition and living costs for international students at French grandes ecoles including HEC. Armenia is typically an eligible country but I'd encourage you to check the current requirements carefully on the Campus France website, as eligibility criteria and age limits can vary by cycle. If you qualify, it's a serious financial lever and something to plan around from the start of your application cycle.
On school list more broadly: beyond HEC, I'd look seriously at INSEAD and IESE in Barcelona, both of which recruit heavily for international profiles and value leadership stories like yours. ESCP is also worth considering as a slightly more accessible option with strong European positioning and a genuinely international structure across multiple campuses. SDA Bocconi in Milan is another solid target, particularly if you have any interest in finance or the Southern European market.

MSc programs at schools like X-HEC and ESMT typically have a hard cap around 18 months of post-graduation experience, sometimes less. With 4 years post-graduation (2 of which military), you were almost certainly above their target profile regardless of your score. This is a program fit issue, not a quality issue.
For the HEC MBA, the picture is genuinely positive. Your profile is the kind HEC finds interesting: non-traditional background, strong leadership story, real technical expertise, geography that's underrepresented in the cohort. The 615 FE is the main thing to address before applying. It's not disqualifying at all, but pushing to 650+ would give the rest of your application much more room to breathe. Sectionally your Verbal and Quant are already solid, so DI at 78 is the one to work on.
What the application is currently missing is some signal of business interest on the CV. You don't need to change jobs, but adding something concrete helps a lot: a business-focused online course, a case competition, a project where you engaged with the commercial or strategic side of a problem rather than just the technical side. Adcoms want to see that you understand business contexts, not just data pipelines, and right now the CV doesn't give them much to work with on that front.
On the student activism from 2017 to 2020: worth including briefly in the additional info section if you can connect it to a specific impact or leadership moment. Don't lead with it, but don't leave it out either.
One thing worth looking into: the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship, which is a French government scholarship that covers tuition and living costs for international students at French grandes ecoles including HEC. Armenia is typically an eligible country but I'd encourage you to check the current requirements carefully on the Campus France website, as eligibility criteria and age limits can vary by cycle. If you qualify, it's a serious financial lever and something to plan around from the start of your application cycle.
On school list more broadly: beyond HEC, I'd look seriously at INSEAD and IESE in Barcelona, both of which recruit heavily for international profiles and value leadership stories like yours. ESCP is also worth considering as a slightly more accessible option with strong European positioning and a genuinely international structure across multiple campuses. SDA Bocconi in Milan is another solid target, particularly if you have any interest in finance or the Southern European market.

From what I saw on the official website, they didn't mention any hard professional cap for the DSAIB program, so it feels uncertain to me.
UPD: I checked out the official Admissions section of the DSAIB program: "This master is just as relevant for IT specialists and applied mathematicians as it is for high-potential students with little to no former exposure to IT and statistics, as long as they have a strong level in mathematics."
Another thing I would like to highlight is the HEC MBA program, because HEC is the primary goal for me, while the others are additional but not inferior ones.
Here, I have 2 questions:
1. Based on my work experience (4 years at the moment of the 2027 intake), will it be sufficient for my candidacy?
2. I have some ideas at my workplace to initiate some fundamental processes that will decrease our business solutions delivery time by changing internal pipelines. Will success in this direction boost my chances in terms of the MBA candidacy? I know that side activities might be helpful as well, but I believe that hands-on deliveries might do double work.
About my student activities:
I have been an active participant and organiser of different activities as a part of a student initiative from our university. All of these contributed significantly in universities, especially after the political events of 2018.
