Wharton Shakes Up its EMBA Admissions Process: What’s Up?
Wharton has shaken up its EMBA admissions process. These are three very notable changes:
1. Invite-only interviews. The school is now only allowing invite-only interviews. This is a hugely significant change. Before, Wharton required that all candidates completed their interviews before they submitted their applications; the school interviewed all applicants as a part of the admissions process. The shift to invitation-only interviews means Wharton will be selective about who can even proceed to that stage of the admissions process, which means your application must be in GREAT condition, or you may find you are eliminated without a chance to interview.
2. Earlier admissions deadline. For years and years, Wharton’s R1 deadline was in the first week of December, and its R2 deadline was in the first week of February. The earlier deadlines imply that Wharton wants more time before the matriculation date to sort out who it will admit and who it will transition from the waitlist if spaces become available.
3. Fewer essays. This year, Wharton’s EMBA essay questions remain the same as last year, except that the school has omitted the traditional short essay it asked about how you will handle the demand of the Wharton workload. Therefore, instead of three required essays and one optional essay, this year’s application has two required essays and one optional essay. The smaller number of essays implies that the school expects a large volume of candidates and is trying to make the process more manageable as it reviews applications.
Significantly, these changes all point in the same direction. Wharton seems to be expecting a very competitive year with a large volume of applicants. It is making the process easier on the admissions team, with fewer essays to review and fewer candidates to interview. It is also giving itself more time to round out its class from waitlisted candidates after the R2 decisions go out.
