Been searching online for this topic for a while now with little factual information to show for it.
Does anyone out there know the prospects for people who want to switch to the energy industry.
I am hoping to move into clean-tech and this move is one of the main reasons behind my pursuit of an MBA. I have plenty of sales, marketing, and some managerial experience. I am hoping that this, combined with a MBA from an elite European of US school, will give me good chances at a clean-tech company or at a consulting company with a focus on clean-tech. However, I have no experience in this industry and it seems that many of the traditional energy companies prefer MBA who are already familiar with the industry (especially some engineering background).
Can anyone tell me what the prospects (especially my prospects) are within this industry? And if a internship within the industry will help my odds of employment after?

Prospects in an emerging industry are mostly about the effort that you make in business school to position yourself. Since very few clean tech companies recruit at top MBA programs, most of the effort to find a job will be up to you. I had a few friends in business school who wanted to pursue non-traditional careers or live in areas where recruitment was not active (on-campus) so they became active in industry/professional clubs, starting to make contacts as a graduate student in companies they were interested in (people like to speak to students), and even did two consulting studies for companies in their target industry. By such efforts, all were able to secure jobs by the time they graduated. One thing they also did was to target alumni from day one -- and keep in touch with them throughout the course of their education.
If this is your goal, then you should go for it. Just go in with an open mind and know that you have to invest a lot of energy developing your own career opportunities.
