I also got 4 miles using B only.

Total Bypass = 3 + 8+ x

Accoring to B,

Direct distance - 4 = 3 + x

Direct distance = 4 + 3 + x

so Bypass - Direct = 4

Agree with B.
But, I got C. Only after seeing explanation, I could see that the answer is B.

I dont understand why it is B?

I thought it should be D. I agree that ST2 alone is sufficient.

But ST 1 is sufficient too....
If the speed and time is given, we can know the distance of XY. If x is the 2nd southbound direction, using pythagoras therom, XY^XY = 8^2 +
(X+3)^2.

We can therefore solve for x. Thus we can know the diffence in bypass and direct. Anybody agree???

It should be "D".

We can get the answer by both equations.

Statement 1: Gives d = 10.

(3+z)^2+64 = 100
=> z = 3.

Statement 2: As you guys solved.

True, the answer is D.

Statement 1: gives d = 10

Since the base is 8 and the hypotenuse is 10, we can tell that it is a 3:4:5 right triangle.

3:4:5 ---> 3+z : 8 : 10 ---> 3+z = 2 x 3 = 6 ---> z = 3
