I think there is an ambiguity. It is not told whether this is an arithemetic, geometric or some other sequence. Whether it is given by the formula, recursion etc.

Difference between the 3rd term and 10th term = 28. So the difference between each term is 4. So (87-10) i.e. 77*4=308
So -3-308=-311
So -311 is the answer (C)

But I have the same problem as bagrettin, there is an ambiguity here... This will eat up some time in exam conditions...

In the actual exam there will be no ambiguity, rest assured. Such a question will definitely not be there. You will not waste time wondering what they mean to ask you since they will be very clear in their directions. Every GMAT question goes through multiple levels of filters. In fact, it is quite possible that the original poster missed mentioning that it is an arithmetic progression since even a test prep provider will not make such a mistake or it could be a typo at the source.
