This is apparently from a collection of 770+ questions. My friend who had just given his GMAT passed me his materials and I found this unsolvable problem in it.
I am glad that such questions dont appear in the GMAT or do they?

No, you'd never see something quite like this on the GMAT. I've seen a lot of "800-level questions" which aren't 800-level questions at all. High level questions on the GMAT are not hard because they are extraordinarily long or complicated. They don't give you 10 equations/10 unknowns problems for example. High level problems are hard because they test several concepts in one question, cleverly disguise which concepts are being tested, require a tricky chain of logic, or include a trick or a trap that only someone with a deep understanding of the concepts will spot. I don't find real 800-level GMAT questions to be any more time-consuming than 500-level questions, at least once you see what you need to do.

Of course overlapping set questions do show up on the GMAT quite often; it's just the absurd complexity of the question in your post, and its imprecise use of language, that make it very unrealistic.
