A GMAT class has a ratio of girls to boys of 1.5 to 3. If the class has a total of 36 students, how many more girls are there than boys?

A. 8
B. 10
C. 12
D. 15
E. 18

G:B= 1.5 :3

Basically number of girls is two time the number of boys

dividing 36 into 2:1 we get 24:12

Therefore, there are 12 more girls than boys

C is the answer

If G/B = 1.5:3, doesn't that, instead, mean that the number of girls is half the number of boys? The question should be, how many more boys than girls, or, worded as a modulus of sorts, the difference between the number of boys and girls. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

G/B = 1.5:3 = 1:2 -> B = 2G, therefore, 3G = 36 and G = 12, B = 24; or,
G/B = 1.5:3 -> 1.5x + 3x = 36, therefore x = 8, and B = 24, G = 12.

I totally agree with you !

Hi Bunuel,

Please correct the question-no of boys are twice the no of girls here

Ratio G:B=1:2
Boys=24, Girls=12
Answer=12 C
