Malcolm's boat moves at 10 miles per hour in still water. He boats for 4 hours down the stream and then for 4 hours up the stream. If the speed of the water current is 6 miles per hour, how far is he from the starting point?

A. 16 miles
B. 24 miles
C. 32 miles
D. 40 miles
E. 48 miles

Malcom travels (10 + 6) x 4 = 16 x 4 = 64 miles downstream and then (10 - 6) x 4 = 4 x 4 = 16 miles back upstream, so he’s 64 - 16 = 48 miles from his starting point.

Answer: E

Speed of boat in up stream = 10 - 6 = 4 mph
Speed of boat in down stream = 10 + 6 = 16 mph

Distance covered upstream = speed*time = 4*4 = 16 miles
Distance covered downstream = 16 * 4 = 64 miles.

Thus, the distance from starting point will be 64 - 16 miles = 48 miles.

The correct option is E.
