There are 4 card-processing machines in an office. The fastest of these machines processes x cards in 7 hours and the slowest processes x cards in 8 hours. Which of the following could be the average time per machine for each of the 4 machines to process x cards?

(A) 7.2
(B) 7.3
(C) 7.5
(D) 7.6
(E) 7.7

Am I missing something?
It seems that B, C, D and E are all possible.

For example, the 4 times (to process x cards) COULD be 7 hrs, 7.5 hrs, 7.5 hrs and 8 hrs
Here, the average time = (7 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 8)/4 = 7.5 hours (answer choice C)

Cheers,
Brent

My thoughts exactly. Could someone please shed more light on this question?.
Thanks.

Given: There are 4 card-processing machines in an office. The fastest of these machines processes x cards in 7 hours and the slowest processes x cards in 8 hours.

Asked: Which of the following could be the average time per machine for each of the 4 machines to process x cards?

To find the average time per machine for each of the 4 machines to process x cards, let us take 2 cases in which 2 extremes times are taken

Case 1: Fastest
3 fastest machines processes x cards in 7 hours and 1 slowest processes x cards in 8 hours.
The average time per machine for each of the 4 machines to process x cards = (3*7+8)/4 = 29/4 = 7 1/4 = 7.25 hours

Case 2: Slowest
3 slowest machines processes x cards in 8 hours and 1 fastest processes x cards in 7 hours.
The average time per machine for each of the 4 machines to process x cards = (3*8+7)/4 = 31/4 = 7 3/4 = 7.75 hours

(A) 7.2
(B) 7.3
(C) 7.5
(D) 7.6
(E) 7.7

Answers B, C, D & E are all possible

We need to find out average of Four Machine.
We have one restriction that is rate of each machine is between 7 and 8.
Slowest Plus fastest =15 so remaining two will be the difference of total -15.
Lets check the answer:

A: 7.2 is avg of all four total : 7.2*4 = 28.8 remaining 28.8 -15 = 13.8 ( answer has to be between 14 and 15)
B 7.3 total: 7.3*4 = 29.2 ---- 29.2-15 = 14.2 yes HOLD
C: 7.5 Total: 30 -----30-15 =15 no
D 7.6 total 30.4--- 30.4-15 =15.4 no
E 7.7 total 30.8---- 30.8-15 = 15.8 NO

Answer B.
