A thousand people voted on a resolution with 10% of the votes being invalid. After some discussion 1,000 people voted again. This time there were 20% invalid votes. The opponents were increased by 50% while the motion was now rejected by a majority, which is 300% more than it was formerly passed by. How many people voted against the resolution after the discussion?

B. 300
C. 350
D. 400
E. 500

POE is the best way to approach this question. Option D, 400. If 400 people are voting against the resolution for the first time, then 500 people are voting in favor. Now, in the second voting, persons voting against the resolution would be 600, therefore, the person voting in favor is 200.

In the first voting, the resolution was passed by 100 votes, and in the second voting, the resolution was defeated by 400 votes that is 300% more than 100.

Given, First time, Voted= 1000, Invalid= 100 (10% of votes), opponent got = x (say) then Majority got = (900-x)

Now, (900-x)- x = Passed in 1st case. and 1.5x - (800- 1.5x)= failed in 2nd case.

Increase in % = [1.5x - (800- 1.5x) - (900-x)- x]/[(900-x)- x] *100 = 300 or, 5x-1700 = 2700-6x or, 11x = 4400
or, x = 400

So, people voted against the resolution after the discussion = 800-1.5x = 800-1.5*400= 200.

after the discussion, I got "people voted against" = 800-1.5x = 800-1.5*400= 200. So I selected A. But OA = D.

You are correct till x=400.
Thereafter, people who voted against resolution is 400*1.5=600

So, the way question is given, the answer should be 600.
Bunuel, please check the options. Either option 600 is missing OR the question should have been ‘before’ the discussion and not ‘after the discussion’.
